About the Artist
Over the years, award winning ceramic artist Geraldine
Powell has worked with various forms of clay art: mosaics, hand-made tile, wall art, sculpture and others.
Eight or nine years ago she fell in love with a type of pottery whereby colors
are fused into the clay before the piece is thrown. Hence the name, Fusion Pottery.
Unlike most pottery,
the glaze is clear, and can be matte, satin or glossy. All of the color is in the clay itself.
This type of pottery
has also been called "agateware" or "agate ware." She has worked almost exclusively with this medium ever
since.
She focuses on the development of color, grain and pattern within the clay body, which enhances and complements
her work’s form and function.
Always pushing
the limits of her material, Geri has developed many new techniques for creating stunning fused color patterns.
While she firmly controls the major design elements of a piece, she allows
serendipity to rule the details. This marriage of control and chance insures that every piece is unique, never to be duplicated.
All her work is food safe.
And
of course, each piece is signed, dated and numbered.
Geraldine is a co-owner of The Orchid Gallery at 111 Frazier
Ave. in Chattanooga, TN.
